- Description
Futura Design is seeking a talented CAD Engineer to join our innovative team at either our Leamington or Coventry sites, with opportunities available on both a permanent or contract basis.
About Futura Design
Futura Design is an industry-leading specialist in the delivery of high-end Design Models, Prototype Vehicles and Show Cars for prestigious global automotive brands.
Working from client-supplied Class A surface data, we engineer and manufacture fully realised physical vehicles — combining advanced CAD engineering, precision manufacturing and craftsmanship to deliver confidential, technically demanding programmes under immovable deadlines.
Every project is unique. Every solution is engineered from first principles.
The Role
As a CAD Engineer at Futura, you will take A-surface data and engineer it into complete, manufacturable vehicle assemblies.
You will design the structural architecture, component breakdown strategy and manufacturing approach for concept vehicles and show cars — ensuring digital intent translates accurately into physical reality.
This is not a production engineering role. There are no repeated part numbers. No pre-defined solutions. Each project requires technical judgement, problem-solving and close collaboration with build and manufacturing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineer complete prototype vehicle structures from client A-surface data
- Design steel chassis frameworks to support full component stacking and assembly
- Develop robust component breakdown strategies aligned to CMF documentation and finishing requirements
- Apply dimensional offsets for paint, trim and finishing build allowances
- Define appropriate manufacturing routes and materials based on:
- Geometry and wall thickness feasibility
- CNC machining constraints (envelope, tooling reach, access)
- SLA additive manufacturing capabilities (up to 800mm³ build volumes)
- Composite mould and pattern strategies
- External supplier capability and lead time considerations
- Engineer fixing strategies appropriate to component size, weight and serviceability
- Design moulds and patterns for composite production
- Integrate simple mechanical systems including:
- Adjustable ride height strategies
- Hub and axle assemblies
- Latch systems and movement mechanisms
- Work closely with:
- Project Managers
- Prototype Build Technicians
- CNC and Additive Manufacturing teams
- Paint and finishing departments
- Review manufactured components to validate engineering intent and quality
- Support creation of BOMs and build documentation
- Manage CAD workflows and data within Dassault Enovia PLM
Experience & Skills Required
- Proven experience in automotive, motorsport or specialist prototype engineering
- Strong capability working from Class A surface data
- Extensive experience using Catia software
- Advanced understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles
- Practical knowledge of CNC machining, composites and additive manufacturing
- Experience designing structural assemblies and mechanical integration strategies
- Strong appreciation of gap and flush targets in automotive environments
- Ability to make sound engineering decisions under timing and budget pressure
- Clear communicator able to collaborate across engineering and build disciplines
- Experience using PLM systems (Dassault Enovia advantageous)
What We’re Looking For
- An engineer who understands the realities of physical build — not just digital modelling
- Strong technical judgement and ownership of engineering decisions
- A practical mindset — designs must work in the workshop, not just on screen
- High standards of dimensional accuracy and attention to detail
- Genuine enthusiasm for automotive engineering and vehicle construction
Working at Futura
- High-value, confidential automotive programmes
- One-off concept and show car builds
- Close collaboration between engineering and build teams
- Technically demanding and varied project work
Delivery dates do not move. Flexibility and commitment are expected during critical project phases.
